Summary of

Jersey vessels lost at sea

between 1836-82

According to the various almanacs published by the Jersey newspapers in the period 1836 to 1882 there were 534 Jersey registered vessels lost at sea.

Of these 534 vessels

60 were three-masted vessels

23 were ships

36 were barques and

1 was a three-masted schooner (the Dunloe, 1879)

 

325 were two masted vessels

71 were brigs (1 snow see 1868)

72 were schooner brigs

8 were brigantines (see 1859 & 1869)

161 were schooners

8 were dandys and

5 were ketches

145 were single masted

145 were cutters and

3 were miscellaneous

1 was not classified - the Loyal 1880 and

2 were steamers

 

In 1850 when the Duke of Northumberland organised a competition to design the best style of lfeboat, there was an entry from Jersey.
